The Leader Of The Republican Turkish Party - United Forces Mehmet Ali Talat Won Presidential Election

According to the preliminary results announced by the High Electoral Council, Mr Talat won the election outright, by gaining 55.60 % of the votes cast.

The runner-up, leader of the main opposition National Unity Party Dervis Eroglu, has won 22.73% of the vote, while the Democrat Party Candidate Mustafa Arabacioglu gained 13.22%.

The leader of the New Party Nuri Cevikel won 4.79%, the independent - Zeki Besiktepeli 1.72, the leader of the Communal Liberation Party candidate Huseyin Angolemli 1.05, the Cyprus Socialist Party candidate Zehra Cengiz 0.44 and independents Arif Salih Kirdag 0.30 and Ayhan Kaymak 0.17  of the vote.

The High Electoral Council announced the turnout as 69.51 percent and the President of the Council Taner Erginel said that the election had gone smoothly. 

Turkish Cypriot electorate voted for the election at 577 ballot boxes throughout the Republic.

The outgoing President Rauf Denktas did not contest the election.
